After 8 years of cutting lots of steel (literally tons) with my HF 7' x 12' bandsaw the bronze worm gear took a dump and stripped. Good news I can get a replacement form HF in 5-6 days for $21.00. This is totally my fault, the oil reservoir was empty of lubricant though I had topped it off 1 month ago. Now that I've dissembled the gearbox, I note on the backside the bearings are metal shielded. I have had a Harbor Freight 4 X 6 bandsaw for 12+ years. It works great. You could skip the wood cutting bandsaw and use the HF metal saw for wood cutting. It's a little slower than a dedicated wood saw, but works well. Skip the portable band saws unless you are on a tight budget. Forget the angle grinder.

i was looking for a new circular saw and came across worm drive saws -- when would you use a worm drive saw as opposed to a circular saw?
i have a 12inch miter for cutting 4x4s and i don't think i will be cutting anything thicker than 2 inches with a circular saw but i do like the additional torque that the worm drives seems to provide. i am a regular homeowner DIYer so would i be getting something way to powerful for my needs if i get the worm drive saws?
also, any recommendation among the following saws i am considering?
option 1: http://www.harborfreight.com/7-14-worm-drive-professional-industrial-framing-saw-68988.html (i know it's harbor freight but the reviews look pretty decent)
